EIMS features
EIMS is a powerful standards based Internet mail server with the ease of use you expect from a Macintosh application.
EIMS supports SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, Ph, LDAP, and Eudora auto-configuration (based on ACAP).
Support for filter plugins gives EIMS powerful security, anti-spam, and anti-virus capabilities.
Administration is handled by an easy to use Macintosh administration program that operates over IP for remote administration.
- The POP3 server supports RFC 1939 Post Office Protocol - Version 3,
with APOP, CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, and NTLM authentication.
- The SMTP server supports RFC 821 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol,
with the SIZE extension, command PIPELINING, 8bit and binary messages, and SMTP Authentication with CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, NTLM, PLAIN, and LOGIN.
- A SMTP Submission port supporting RFC 4409 is built in ready to go on port 587.
- The IMAP4 server supports RFC 2060 IMAP4rev1,
with support for IMAP4, and IMAP2 clients. Shared mailboxes are supported using aliases.
- The directory server is a basic Ph and LDAPv2/LDAPv3 server which supports looking up users on the EIMS server. CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, and plaintext authentication is supported.
New Features in EIMS 3.3:
- SMTP Host List: a new combined blacklist/graylist/whitelist.
- Built in filters: EIMS 3.3 has built in filtering for HELO/EHLO host names, MAIL FROM addresses, and RCPT TO addresses, including expression matching.
- Logs can can now be viewed and searched from EIMS Admin.
- New Receive Error Log
- New features for protection against dictionary attacks and distributed attacks.
- The IMAP server now supports file and folder names up to 255 characters with unicode characters.
- IMAP IDLE and QUOTA support.
- LDAP address checking support for spam firewalls/appliances.
- LDAP performance and compatibility improvements.
- LDAP support for images.
- CRAM MD5 authentication for LDAP.
- DIGEST MD5 authentication for POP3, IMAP, SMTP, and LDAP.
- The address name for the primary domain is now used for SMTP greetings, Received headers, and HELO/EHLO commands.
- When IP Multihoming is in use, EIMS now uses the address name for the domain for the IP.
- EIMS Admin is a universal binary.
New Features in EIMS 3.2:
- Completely rewritten relay restrictions with an easier to use interface that gives finer control over relay security.
- New domain name resolver (DNR), EIMS now has it's own DNR, which works around bugs in the Open Transport DNR and performance problems with the OS X DNR. The new DNR does not currently support non-recursive DNSs.
- SMTP Submit port, this is a second SMTP port running on TCP port 587 by default. It currently works exactly the same as the standard SMTP port. This is handy for clients that are stuck behind an ISP that blocks port 25 access.
- Sending Setup option for maximum recipients per message.
- Expand SMTP Addresses option, you can now turn this off, with EIMS 3.1 and earlier it was always on.
- The SMTP server (both port 25 and 587) now reports Telnet connections and connections that look like port scans (connections where no data is sent and it doesn't time out).
- Full name, last login time, and last IP address are now shown in EIMS Admin, these update dynamically as users log in.
- Sorting and type selection in the Relay Restrictions and IP Range Restrictions, backup MXs are also sorted from last label to first (all .com domains sort together, and all company.com domains sort together), this is improved over EIMS 3.1 in that sorting is done forward within each label, so .au now sorts before .com for example. EIMS 3.1 just sorted from last character to first.
- New IP Range Restrictions for SMTP submit, and separate IP Range Restrictions for POP3 and IMAP.
- Separate Sending Error log, you no longer have to wade through all those "connection timed out to domain.org" errors looking for important stuff like filter hits and wrong passwords.
- multiple addresses can now be specified in the forwarding for a user by separating them with commas
- The admin connection is started separately before all other services, allowing connection from EIMS Admin even if something is stopping other services from stating up (out of memory, port still in use, not running as root on OS X with the OS X version, etc.)
- CPU usage is much reduced when EIMS is idle.
- HFS+ directory iterators are used on OS 9 and OS X, this speeds up things like calculating disk space used by a user, listing folders from IMAP, and a bunch of other things.
- Numerous other performance improvements.
New features in EIMS Server 3.1:
- Lots of new Apple Events and improved Apple Event performance.
